8 Best Work Cafés in Malta – St. Julians area

Malta is still in its infancy stage when it comes to ‘work cafes’ and I am always on the hunt for a cafe with the right ‘working’ vibe, good wifi, enough wall plugs and relatively good coffee. Let me just say, I have been curating this list for a while now and have tried and tested most of these cafes. There has been a significant increase in freelance travellers in recent years, especially in the busy town of St.Julians, with Malta becoming a more famous tourist destination. As a local, I have seen my country grow and it’s so amazing to see other people appreciating our tiny little island. Even in the last 5 years, so many new restaurants and cafes have opened up and I’m so excited to share my favourite work cafes in St.Julians with you!

Most of the time if the cafe meets most of the criteria, I just take my laptop and make it a workspace, even if they don’t specify that it’s a ‘work’ cafe.

1. Costa coffee – Spinola

Being a chain restaurant, this one is usually the favourite since it feels familiar. The Costa in Spinola was probably one of the first work cafes I can think of in the area. Upstairs is full of places to work, with a pleasant view of Spinola. However, being one of the first means it is one of the oldest and wear and tear is apparent. Most of the plugs don’t even work anymore, so I would make sure to go with a full charge on my laptop.

    • Plugs: 3/5
    • Wifi: They have wifi but I’ve had problems connecting before. It’s not totally reliable.
    • Coffee: 4/5

2. Costa coffee – Tower Road

This is a recent addition to the Costa chain and I really love the decor of this Costa. It definitely has a more modern and cosier vibe to it. Again, its glass windows allow you to look out onto the road and it has that buzz that feels like there’s a lot happening. In Winter they even get these tall fire heaters out and it’s so cosy.

3. The Avenue – Portomaso

This is a very new restaurant in a prime location next to the Portomaso tower. I love the redo on this decor and although it is a restaurant, there are lots of spots to sit with your laptop and have a nice cup of coffee and maybe some lunch!

4. Cafe cuba – Paceville

This cafe is probably the most underrated. It’s part of the Cafe Cuba chain which is all about that south American feeling, I love their music and aesthetic. Again, not really a work cafe but you can make it one and you’d be lucky to find a plug.

This is a pretty reliable place to work from a cafe in Paceville area. Although the coffee can be a little pricey, they’re not short of places to sit or to plug in.

6. Pascucci – Baystreet

This is part of the Italian cafe chain Pascucci. It is a smaller version of the one in Paceville but it’s quite cute and open, so you can see the world moving by outside. I must warn you that it’s right next to the road and people love to use their horns! It’s more of a quick-stop place for me.

Hidden away in the backstreets of Spinola, this cafe is the perfect introvert’s dream. You have a choice of sitting on the balcony overlooking the bay or inside. I like the fresh feel of this since it is brand new.

This cafe is actually part of Hotel Juliani and is top-notch when it comes to decor. You can say I left the best for last as this place has high-quality service and a serene work cafe experience. They have lots of different seating options which are so comfy, a high priority characteristic of a good work cafe.
